South Gate

South Gate: Affordable Homes in Sarasota, with Character & Charm

Do you love driving through “old Florida” neighborhoods, admiring the different styles of architecture and landscaping? If you’re thinking of buying in a neighborhood where each home has it’s own character and charm, take a drive through South Gate. Roughly bordered by Hyde Park Street to the north, Beneva to the east, Bee Ridge to the South and Tamiami to the west, South Gate is about 4 miles from St. Armand’s Circle and Lido Beach, and about the same distance to Siesta Key so the location is perfect for those of us who love sunset walks on the beach.

School districts are important whether you have kiddos or not. If you buy in South Gate, you’ll be happy to know that most of South Gate is in the Southside Elementary and Brookside Middle School areas. Southside Elementary scores at 10 out of 10 on the Great Schools.org site; Brookside scores a 7 out of 10.

Homes for sale in South Gate currently range from about $250,000 on up to about $550,000 and are usually between about 1,100 and 2,300 square feet. There is an optional HOA which gives you access to the community center and pool for a nominal fee of just $65 per year, so if you don’t have your own pool and you like to get to know the neighbors, it’s well worth it!

If you’re considering renting your South Gate home out during the months you’re not here, good news, there is no minimum lease period and you can generally rent it out as frequently as you wish. Some areas are subject to Sarasota County rules which have a one month minimum rental period. There are a few deed restrictions in place to keep the community looking neat and clean.

One drive through the neighborhood and you’ll see that these homes have been well built, well maintained and each has it’s own unique character and charm. Many have been thoughtfully renovated and are a big draw for those who love the mid-century modern style.
